Harvest Moon (which became Story of Seasons in 2014) is a series of video games simulating life on a farm. It was created by Yasuhiro Wada and the games were initially developed by Victor Interactive Software. The main objective is to transform an old, dilapidated farm into a thriving operation. Players manage crops, livestock and can also make friends with their neighbors or find a mate. The series began on Super Nintendo in 1996 in Japan. Natsume, a Western publisher, took over publishing the Harvest Moon games for the West. In 2014, Marvelous created its own American subsidiary, XSEED Games, to ensure localization of future games. However, Natsume retained the rights for the Harvest Moon title, forcing XSEED Games to change the title to Story of Seasons. At the same time, Natsume developed his own Harvest Moon games.
Story of Seasons continues to be created by Marvelous in Japan. Current games are aimed primarily at the Western market. Over the years, the Harvest Moon series has lost its notoriety, while Story of Seasons has continued to innovate and maintain its benchmark status in farm life simulation games.
